The Vietnamese Community School was founded in 1980. Throughout the forty years of its existence, the school’s curriculum and activities have remained consistent with its founding principles:

• Helping students to have a thorough understanding of their roots;
• Helping to bridge the generational gap between parents and children; and
• Helping future generations to maintain the Vietnamese language and culture.

There are currently 376 students studying Vietnamese (R – Year 10) and 166 students doing Maths tutoring sessions (Year 1 – 10) on Saturday mornings and afternoons at the Adelaide Secondary School of English.

The Vietnamese Community School is managed by a leadership team comprising of one principal and one deputy principal. School matters are attended to by 2 supervisors, 29 teachers, and 3 volunteers.

The year 2016 also witnessed the establishment of a Parents Group whose members have become an integral part of the school life. For the majority of children who are coming to attend the Maths tutoring session and then stay on for their Vietnamese lessons, our Parents Group’s canteen was a welcome addition to the school’s services. On the last day of Term 3, our students also have had a memorable day thanks to the generosity of our parents in donating their time and effort to the running of the Full Moon celebration. The sports activities were proven to be popular not only among the youngsters but also among parents and teachers.

Learning how to communicate in Vietnamese will help the younger generations of Vietnamese Australians to develop an appreciation of their culture and language. A steady supply of culturally and linguistically diverse members will undoubtedly be a recognised contribution of our community to the society in general.
